Keira Knightley is considering a visit to Australia to promote her war epic Atonement.

The film, which has been given rave reviews in Britain, will be released in Australia on Boxing Day. Knightley may visit Sydney in December for a whirlwind promotional trip, if industry speculation is to be believed.

A spokeswoman for Universal Pictures in Sydney was unable to confirm or deny the rumour when contacted on Friday but insiders say executives from the film are trying their hardest to secure the big-name star for a red carpet appearance. (…)

Hundreds of people queued in a Norfolk town for the chance to play an extra in a Hollywood movie starring Keira Knightley and Ralph Fiennes.

The Duchess is a chronicle of the life of 18th Century aristocrat Georgiana, the Duchess of Devonshire.

A casting session for extras was held at Fakenham Methodist Church but so many people attended the doors had to be closed after two hours on Saturday.

“The whole thing was quite daunting, very similar to ‘Pride and Prejudice,‘” Keira Knightley confessed about the making of “Atonement” while we had English Breakfast tea at the Toronto Film Festival. “It’s a book people are really obsessed by. Also, ‘Atonement’ is a book famous for being unadaptable into a film, so a lot of people were very skeptical about it.“

British actress Keira Knightley was shooting Pirates of the Caribbean in the Bahamas when a friend mailed her the novel Silk, by the Italian writer Alessandro Baricco.

“He wrote a note saying, ‘I just read this. I think you’re going to love it,’ ” remembers the brunette beauty, who swept into Toronto earlier this month to promote two films at the film festival: Silk (which opened commercially yesterday) and Atonement (opening later this year). “And I did. Completely and absolutely adored it.

“I sent it on to a friend of mine, and this book managed to sort of go all over the world. It finally got lost in Slovakia when we tried to send it to a friend who was working over there. It got lost in the postal service,” she says with a giggle.

“It’s the most exquisitely written piece. Every word has been chosen carefully and is completely perfect,” says Knightley, who studied the classics and English literature at Esher College on the outskirts of London. “Its simplicity is astonishing. It’s erotic and completely heartbreaking.”
