Atonement stars Keira Knightley and James McAvoy may have been snubbed by the Oscars this year - but British film fans have not let them down.

They pair - Keira, 22, and James, 28, have been nominated for best actress and actor in the 2008 Sony Ericsson Empire Awards.

Keira will be up against Harry Potter’s Emma Watson, Angelina Jolie, Cate Blanchett and Katherine Heigl.

Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe, 18, has also been nominated for best actor with Matt Damon in The Bourne Ultimatum, Simon Pegg in Hot Fuzz and Gerard Butler in 300.

Keira Knightley…does the name ring a bell? Think Best Picture Academy Award-nominee Atonement. Now do you recall who I’m talking about?

If you do, then you’ll soon find out that her green evening dress worn in Atonement will be auctioned off in an online auction by the Clothes Off Our Back Foundation beginning tomorrow, Friday February 1 until Saturday March 1.

Bidding starts at $1,000 for the emerald backless dress seen in the movie’s romantic sequences. All proceeds from the auction will benefit Variety-The Children’s Charity of Southern California.

The fragile dress is one of quite a few designed specifically for Keira Knightley and authenticated by Academy Award-nominee for costume design, Jacqueline Durran. I haven’t seen the film yet, but the dress is beautiful enough for me to look into all this fuss and finally check out the movie for myself.

Another awards ceremony, another award for Atonement. The plush Ian McEwan adaptation was last night named best film at the Richard Attenborough film awards, a newly-named event that is voted for by UK regional journalists.

For good measure, Atonement also picked up prizes for best film-maker (Joe Wright), best actor (James McAvoy) and screenwriter (Christopher Hampton), further buttressing its status as one of the frontrunners for next month’s Oscars. But in the latest snub to the film’s star, Keira Knightley missed out on the actress award, which went to Cate Blanchett for Elizabeth: The Golden Age. Initially tipped as an Oscar favourite, Knightley failed to pick up an Academy Award nomination.

I’ve added to the gallery some captures of Atonement, they are not HQ, but it’s a good quality… when the DVD it’s out I’ll substitute for capturers with a better quality.

The 80th Academy Awards nominations were announced on Tuesday and while there many British names, Golden Globes nominees Keira Knightley and James McAvoy missed out.

The two stars of First World War tragedy Atonement were expected to have strong chances to make the Best Actor and Actress categories.

Atonement was nominated as Best Picture and Irish actress Soairse Ronan got a Best Supporting Actress nod for her role in the film.

And there will be plenty of other Brits to cheer on Oscars night (Sunday, Feb 24) - Daniel Day-Lews was nominated as Best Actor, Julie Christie for Best Actress, Tom Wilkinson for Best Supporting Actor and Tilda Swinton for Best Supporting Actress.

The tragic period romance “Atonement” dominated the race for the British Academy Film Awards, with nominations in 14 categories, including best picture, actor, actress and director.

“No Country for Old Men,” “There Will Be Blood” and “The Bourne Ultimatum” also received multiple nods for Britain’s equivalent of the Oscars, organizers announced Wednesday.

The BAFTA prizes, to be awarded at London’s Royal Opera House on Feb. 10, are considered an important indicator of Academy Award prospects. The British awards have a higher-than-usual profile this year with the Hollywood screenwriters’ strike muting the traditional glamour of the U.S. show-business awards season.

In an eclectic field of nominees, Joel and Ethan Coen’s noir western “No Country for Old Men” received nine nods, including best director and three best supporting performer nominations, for Javier Bardem, Tommy Lee Jones and Kelly Macdonald.

Historical epic “There Will be Blood” also received nine nominations, including best actor for Daniel Day-Lewis.

British movie Atonement was named best film at a toned-down Golden Globes ceremony in Los Angeles.

But Atonement’s star Keira Knightley lost in the best actress category to veteran Julie Christie for her role in Away From Her. Knightley’s co-star James McAvoy lost in the best actor category to Daniel Day-Lewis, for There Will Be Blood.

Atonement, the adaptation of Ian McEwan’s best-selling novel set around the Second World War, fought off strong competition from violent thrillers American Gangster, Eastern Promises and No Country for Old Men, legal drama Michael Clayton, historical saga There Will Be Blood and Oprah Winfrey-produced feelgood film The Great Debaters.

But the Hollywood glitz was missing as the usually-lavish awards ceremony was replaced with a news conference without any celebrities in attendance because of the continuing writers’ strike. The strike over payment to writers from shows offered on the internet started in November and has led to the Writers Guild of America refusing to let union members work on the star-studded show. Actors said they would boycott the ceremony rather than cross picket lines. To date, the walkout is thought to have cost the Los Angeles area around £700 million and the fate of Hollywood’s biggest night, the Oscars, next month, remains uncertain.
